Creating a luxurious space on a budget

Let's get the boring part out of the way first!

The best way to start is by setting yourself a budget and allocating expenses. An easy way to overspend is by not setting realistic expectations - clue yourself up on what everything costs, that way you avoid running into any nasty surprises and having to spend more than you had anticipated.

Take your time - patience is key; remember that quality and luxury takes time (especially on a budget!) - "it takes 6 months to build a Rolls Royce and 13 hours to build a Toyota". It will all be worth it when everything comes together.

Where to spend your money:

Bathrooms - we spend a lot of personal time in our bathrooms, so it makes sense that this would be an area you would allocate a healthy budget for. From tiles to sanitary ware, these are both items that are essential to creating a luxurious look.

Kitchen - cheap cabinetry is painfully obvious, and a tell-tale sign of a low budget. Splurge on your cabinetry and worktops (they are there to stay), and save on your appliances; which can be replaced and upgraded more reasonably.

Flooring - flooring will instantly transform a room. Make sure you source quality materials; whether it is wood or carpet.

Where to save up:

DIY furniture - dress up cheap IKEA furniture; paint, add handles, etc. Pinterest is your bible for this one. With a lick of paint and a few decorative items, this Pinterest user transformed an IKEA dresser into their own unique one-of-a-kind piece - completely bespoke and kind to your pocket! A Sunday well spent. Websites like www.superfront.com specialise in IKEA hack pieces.

Fabrics - being clever with your use of fabrics is a fantastic way to create that feeling of luxury. Textured fabrics look and feel luxurious. Linen fabrics are a great way to add texture to your space and are easily found at reasonable prices - they are also very durable. Beware of fads; that new velvet sofa won't be looking so new and velvety in a year!

In with the old:

Is your sofa looking a little outdated and used and abused? No need to throw it out; an effortless way to update your current upholstered furniture is to reupholster it in a fabulous new fabric! Befriending your local upholsterer to get a good deal doesn't hurt either!
