As winter draws in and the days get shorter, the home becomes a hive of activity. There's something very appealing about shutting the doors on the cold weather and playing host to family and friends in the run up to the festive season.
BTL's Interior Design team discuss ways to make the home feel comfortable and inviting, where winter evenings can be enjoyed.
Focus on the Fireplace
When you think of cosy nights in putting your feet up a fireplace is usually in the picture. An open fire will instantly bring about feelings of warmth and comfort and it becomes the focal point of any living room.
Lighting and Low Level
Lighting is a way of creating ambience to any room. BTL recommend installing dimmer switches as this will enable you to control the levels of lighting, and low-level or LED strip lighting can create a relaxing environment without the brightness of overhead lights.
Wall lamps and floor lamps can both create this desired effect. Lamp shades are a great way of creating ambience by using introducing warm colours and even pattern.
Embrace the Eclectic
Cosiness has no space for minimalism. Decorate your living space with fun and interesting furniture pieces. Artwork and ornaments can be added to create an intimate feeling, while a shelf piled high with books can also create that cosy library feeling, where you'll want to settle down with an old classic.
Roll out the Rugs
Instantly add warmth to wood or tiled flooring with a large rug - a less permanent choice than carpet but a good insulator to keep you warm. There are some beautiful patterned rugs on the market which can add a pop of colour to your living room or transform your entrance hall during the winter months.
Colour, Texture and Pattern
The use of different textures such as soft wool and sumptuous velvets can instantly add to a space. Textiles can be so versatile, so if you don't want to redecorate a room why not play with the soft furnishings by adding cushions and throws in rich jewel colours. Just as the clothes you wear are seasonal there are many home textiles and prints that are too and will get you in the mood for the festive period.
A Nod to Nature
Take inspiration from the outdoors and add seasonal flowers, pine and foliage to decorate your rooms. Scented candles in wintery fragrances such as winter berries and oranges will not only please your senses but also adds to the atmosphere creating an inviting space.
